Disputing information will not cause it to stay longer on the credit report

Dear Max,

If I dispute something on my credit report and the status shows that it should be on record until XXXX date, will it remain on my report longer no matter what the outcome of the dispute, or will it still "drop off" on the date that it shows?

- APA

Dear APA,

Disputing information you believe is inaccurate will not cause information to remain longer on your credit report.

The original delinquency date is used to determine when negative payment information is deleted from your credit report. The original delinquency date is the date the first missed payment is reported to Experian.

Federal law requires that collection agencies carry over the original delinquency date and report that date to Experian to ensure that the original account and any subsequent collection accounts are deleted at the right time.

Disputing an account does not change the original delinquency date. Neither does making a payment on an account that is delinquent or making a payment to a collection agency. That may change the “recent activity date,” but that simply reflects when something was reported for the account. It does not affect when the negative information will be deleted.

Thanks for asking.
